II. Types of Waste Gas Treatment Equipment


1. Absorption Equipment

Wet Scrubbers:Wet scrubbers are one of the most common types of absorption equipment. They work by passing the waste gas through a liquid (usually water or a chemical solution). The liquid absorbs the pollutants from the gas. For example, in a flue - gas desulfurization (FGD) system used in power plants, a wet scrubber can use a limestone - gypsum slurry to absorb sulfur dioxide. 2. Adsorption Equipment

Activated Carbon Adsorbers: Activated carbon has a highly porous structure, which gives it a large surface area for adsorption. When waste gas passes through an activated carbon adsorber, the pollutants such as VOCs and certain odorous compounds are adsorbed onto the surface of the carbon. For example, in the printing industry, activated carbon adsorbers are used to remove solvent vapors from the exhaust air.Once the activated carbon is saturated with pollutants, it can be regenerated (by heating or other methods) to release the adsorbed substances and reuse the carbon. However, the regeneration process requires energy and careful handling to avoid the release of concentrated pollutants.Molecular Sieve Adsorbers: Molecular sieves are crystalline aluminosilicates with a regular pore structure. They can selectively adsorb certain molecules based on their size and polarity. For example, in the purification of natural gas, molecular sieve adsorbers are used to remove water vapor and other impurities such as carbon dioxide.


3. Combustion Equipment

Thermal Oxidizers:Thermal oxidizers, also known as incinerators, work by combusting the pollutants in the waste gas at high temperatures. The waste gas is introduced into a combustion chamber, where it is mixed with a fuel (such as natural gas or propane) and burned. Temperatures in the combustion chamber can reach 700 - 1000°C or more. This process is very effective for the destruction of VOCs and other combustible pollutants. The destruction efficiency can be as high as 99% for some substances.However, thermal oxidizers consume a significant amount of energy and can produce secondary pollutants such as nitrogen oxides if the combustion conditions are not properly controlled.Catalytic Oxidizers:Catalytic oxidizers use a catalyst to lower the activation energy required for the combustion of pollutants. The waste gas passes through a catalyst bed (containing materials such as platinum, palladium, or other metal oxides), and the pollutants are oxidized at a lower temperature (usually 300 - 500°C) compared to thermal oxidizers. This reduces the energy consumption. They are widely used for the treatment of VOC - laden waste gases in industries such as painting and chemical manufacturing.


4. Filtration Equipment

Bag Filters:Bag filters use fabric bags to filter out particulate matter from the waste gas. The gas passes through the bags, and the particles are trapped on the surface or inside the fabric. The bags are usually made of materials such as polyester, polypropylene, or fiberglass. They can effectively remove particles with a diameter of a few microns or larger. For example, in cement plants, bag filters are used to capture the cement dust from the kiln exhaust. The filtration efficiency can be up to 99.9% for particulate matter.Regular cleaning or replacement of the bags is necessary to maintain the filtration efficiency.Electrostatic Precipitators: Electrostatic precipitators work by charging the particulate matter in the waste gas and then collecting them on oppositely charged plates.
